Approximately 91% of US taxpayers submit their returns via e-file vs. traditional paper income tax returns. Illinois Department of Revenue offers free electronic filing, making returns and refunds faster and far more convenient.
Although, the major benefit of filing your taxes electronically or e-file is that your return is processed twice as fast as traditional paper returns. Free Tax Preparation
All of the options to e-file taxes free are great. However, if you are like many people, including most of my friends and family, you don’t want to think about how to file taxes, youjust want someone else to prepare and e-file taxes for you. The great news is that there are various options for free preparation. Also, these programs usually offer free state e-file too.
VITA – The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance
The VITA program offers free e-filing. You go to your nearest VITA location in person and have a volunteer complete your return. I’ve volunteered in the past; it’s a terrific program. There are also may VITA sites that offer free e-file for military personal.
TCE – Tax Counseling for the Elderly
The TCE program provides free preparation for those 60 and older. You can call 1-800-829-1040 to find a location near you.
