MyTax Illinois – mytax.illinois.gov
UPDATED: February 5th, 2017 – It’s that time of year again, Tax season is here. The IRS has begun accepting 2016 tax returns electronically as of Jan 19, 2016 and the sooner you e-file, the faster you get your tax refund.
The State of Illinois offers a secure, electronic self-service system called MyTax Illinois. The system allows you to submit payments securely for returns, view account balances, protest appeal assessments, and see copies of correspondence. We are in no way affiliated with MyTax Illinois, see below for login instructions.
MyTax Illinois Login
Step 1 – Visit the Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR) at tax.illinois.gov
Step 2 – Click on the link to MyTax Illinois to file an individual income tax return. Direct access to MyTax Illinois is also available at MyTax.Illinois.Gov
Step 3 – Login to MyTax Illinois by entering your username and password. If you do not have a MyTax Illinois account, you can create one by clicking the Sign Up Now button.
Please note: you will need to provide specific information about yourself and/or your company. Once IDOR has verified this information, you will receive an authorization code via email. This authorization code will be required the first time you log into MyTax Illinois.
Step 4 – Complete your Illinois State Income Tax Return Forms (IL-1040)
Fill out the Illinois State Income Tax Return forms to determine your refund amount or the amount of taxes you owe the state of Illinois. Once the forms are complete, and you double-checked the data in your forms, you can file your tax return online through MyTax Illinois.

Where’s my Illinois State Refund?
You can track your state refund within 24 hours after your e-filed return has been received or 4 weeks after you mail a paper return. Follow the status of your Illinois State Refund via MyTax Illinois or by calling 800-732-8866.
The Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR) issues most state refunds within 21 business days.
e-File with MyTax Illinois
Approximately 91% of US taxpayers submitted their 2016 tax returns via e-file vs. traditional paper income tax returns. Filing electronic tax returns is faster, safer and far more convenient. Although, the major benefit of filing your taxes electronically or e-file is that your tax return is processed twice as fast as traditional paper tax returns. In fact, you could receive your refund in as little as eight days via e-file and select direct deposit as your payment method for your tax refund versus taking a month or more to receive a refund if you file paper forms.

2016 Income Tax Forms – Illinois

Free Tax Preparation
All of the options to e-file taxes free are great. However, if you are like many people, including most of my friends and family, you just want someone else to prepare and e-file taxes for you. The great news is that there are various options for free tax preparation. Also, these programs usually offer free state e-file too.
VITA – The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance
The VITA program offers free e-filing. You go to your nearest VITA location in person and have a volunteer complete your return. I’ve volunteered in the past; it’s a terrific program. There are also may VITA sites that offer free e-file for military personal.
TCE – Tax Counseling for the Elderly
The TCE program provides free tax preparation for those 60 and older. You can call 1-800-829-1040 to find a location near you.
